Alexei Shirov will be in Toronto Canada on the 27 February this year where we will first listen to one of his chess lectures and then play the simul games.
I'm totally looking forward to it.
Shirov lost a couple of short games against French. Just try it

    The Passing Rule in Simuls

Usually it is stated before the show begins how many times you
can say to the GM 'Pass' when he comes to your board.

The advantage the simul player has is that he can take as long as he likes
looking the postion. You MUST move the moment he appears.
I recall giving a simul in the mid 80's beating three players in the crowd
who had beaten me OTB in competition games!
This was down to me suddenly appearing and they had to move.
(they could passed but some players never use that option.)

As a player in a say 20 board simul you get into a nice comfortable routine
as the GM comes around at a regular pattern.
Suddenly when he has taken out 5 or 6 players (Usually those that failed
to castle.) he starts to come round quicker.

Players get all flustered and bang goes another 5 or 6 players.
Now it's down to 10 and he is coming round quicker.
I played Adjoran in a simul (mid 70's) he started to come round quick,
I got all confused in what I was thinking about (flustered) and dropped a piece.

Down to the last two or three the GM will usually give the players more
    time to think.

Fischer allowed passes but if you asked too often to pass he would tap the
table and say; "Come on buddy, it aint postal chess."
(See The Unknown Bobby Fischer." )

I cannot stress enough that you should play as you would normally.
And that goes for any game against a stronger player.

Playing something strange to get him out the book means you too are out
of the book and there is most likely a very good reason why your chosen move is
not theory. A reason unknown to you but will be spotted right away by the GM.

yes you did ron, one that i resigned prematurely because of certain reservations that i
have about your integrity, after all, having engine matchup rates that put Fischer and
Spassky to shame was really quite daunting for me to play against, but you can easily
demonstrate your chess prowess by playing a game of blitz, ten, fifteen or twenty
minutes even half an hour, i dont mind, whenever you are ready Ron the Rhode Island

Does the GM think on his turn or does he blitz it? Is play a move when I am here a way to even the playing field when playing multiple games?

I am not good in speed chess. I DON'T THINK FAST ENOUGH FOR THAT.
It may take me two or three hours to decide on the best move. Most
people I could beat OTB at regular time controls could wipe my behind
in speed chess. I am not that good OTB either. So that would not prove
I can not think of good moves on my own if given enough time.

RJH i dont care whether you are a pumpkin eater or not, but you should not mock
other players because they have a lower rating than you or because you have beaten
them in the past, everyone is at different levels of understanding, why should they be
    mocked because of it?

The player giving the simul should be able to recognise each postion
10 moves in and recall what he was up too. (I think that is what you are asking.)

In my case it was easy. I was attacking on all boards, gambits being the order of the day.
(I always took White, I always played 1.e4, I always sacced something in the first
6 or 7 moves.). Get them all defending was my motto.
Playing 1.e4 meant I usually had some double or treble games going on.
Much easier for me and harder for the slow thinkers as I cam round faster.

I think in my time I gave about 15 of things. I never came away with a
clean sheet. I always lost a couple.
    I played 125 once (Inverkeithen 1984) winning 122 drawing 3 losing 1.
The loss was an Evans Gambit to a member of the Galashields Chess Club.
(you never forget your losses.) He said I had beaten him the year before.
(I say again you never forget your losses.) 🙂

I recall about 5 years back someone in Bells told me I played them in a simul.

"I know, I remember you, If you had played 10...Bf8 then my Knight sac on f6
    does not work."

Of course I made up the moves on the spot and the fact I remembered him
but his face was a picture. "Wow! you can remember me and the game from 30 years ago."

    Ruxton was in stitches.

I then added: "You wore a yellow tee-shirt and jeans cut off at the knee."
Then he knew I was playing a gag. But it got me a pint.

Who did I mock that did not deserve it? Tell me who and why and if I
can't give you a good reason, I will apologize. In fact, I will apologize
anyway. I apologize to all those chess players who believe I have
mocked them. I make many blunders myself, especially the faster
    I play, without thinking. 😏
