Game 1121956

This was a very enjoyable game that just finished. I was under severe pressure, but managed to scrape out a win. I castled queenside because I didn't really like the advanced pawns and concentration of pieces on the king side. I'm not sure if that was a good idea or not, as I seemed to invite a whole pile of pressure on my open king.

Any comments/suggestions/tactical errors?

Cheers,

D

I have some questions...

Was it actually possible to checkmate him at the end?
If it is possible I would imagine it to be very difficult; so why would he resign?

I was 5 moves away from mating him. I had the hard part of the mating pattern completed, ie: getting him into the correct coloured corner.

Here is a completed BNK mate...

If Ka7 it is 4 moves, if Ka8, then 5 to checkmate. Make the exercise, it is easy (forced moves for the king). The hard work was in the 20 or so moves before that.

Really like the mating pattern at the end. I bet your opponent was hoping you didn't know that ending. Well played 🙂

This is an unforced mate which may pop up during the BNK end game. Are there any other unforced mate patterns that may occur while trying to achieve the forced mate in the correct coloured corner?

The g1 knight was poison. This shows the perils of bringing the Q out too early and being too hungry.

I should have said "being too greedy". Do you agree with this?

I'm almost insulted. Would any of you have resigned this early?
