what colour would you rather play in this situation... end game, white has two pawns side by side mid table being protected by the king, black has no pawns but a rook and the king is at the bottom corner...? would most players go for white in this situation, i would... this is when points break down, black has five whereas white has two and a major piece down, yet those two pawns side by side being supported by the king with only a rook to destory them seem more powerful than any one piece, even a queen

It depends on the exact position. If there was time for black's king to block the pawns I'd still take black. Worst case scenario is that I have to sac the rook for one of the pawns, and can probably force a draw.

If you've got a specific position in mind you could post it.

ill take white everytime. if i was black id forfit then and there. no way for him to take a piece without losing a rook, and you still can escort the single pawn if he does. impossible situation for the rook and king.

its not an exact position, it just seems to me every time i get to the end game winning on points its always those two pawns that just kill me off, i see what you mean by saying the king could offer the rook support but if its bottom table i dont think its gonna move quickly enough to pose a threat. i think a pawn is worth 1 point, but how about 2 pawns side by side..? is that 2 points..?

Very true, indeed.
