I'm not sure why Bg6 is considered the 'main line' here. I realize that playing e6 allows white to trade knight for bishop and leave black with a doubled pawn, but black loses a tempo with Bg6.
I think we're going to get slapped around if we just sit back and let white follow the main line until he's ready to deviate.

I think we're going to ...[text shortened]... k and let white follow the main line until he's ready to deviate.
You're right, black has to give back a tempo here, but he doesn't lose one (White has moved the knight 3 times to get to g3). White will probably respond with Nf3 or Bc4. Either way, after white's next move, black will have one piece developed and white will have two. That's no problem.
The only reason I don't like 5...e6 here is because the Black king becomes exposed after the knight for bishop trade, and Black is a long way from castling. 5...e6 is certainly playable though.
The main problem coming up is the same old problem in the Caro, we're gonna get cramped. White will have more space and will dictate for quite awhile. But should he attack early... we'll just absorb his attack and trade off his pieces. Gain space and then put the smack-down on him in the endgame. 🙂
