That would be dependent on you constantly playing against people who are at the same level as you.
When I started playing I just played for fun without studying. It got to the point where I was constantly getting beaten by stronger players. This caused me to get frustrated and lose interest in the game for a while. I then found that I could only really enjoy the game if I was to study at a greater depth, hence becoming more competative.
If you keep it at a level of just playing for fun without studying the game, you would lose interest. My advice would be, if you want to play chess, be willing to learn the game beyond just the rules. 🙂
