If you mean trying out variations on the board, then yes, there is such a feature. Just click "analyze board" on the game screen, and a small new window with the current position of the game (as well as move history) will pop up. You can move about the pieces in that window however you like, and use it to plan your next moves.

No I mean from the begining of a game so I can practice and analyse openings - is that possible.

You can download a chess interface like Winboard and practice, so you not only make your moves but also load and open databases.
Chessbase lite is free and among the best.
