d4 is played more often, but after Bc4 Qf6 I found this line (so it's not really out of book 😉):
1.e2-e4 e7-e5 2.Ng1-f3 d7-d6 3.Bf1-c4 Qd8-f6 4.d2-d3 Bc8-g4 5.Nb1-d2 Nb8-c6 6.c2-c3 Ng8-e7 7.h2-h3 Bg4-d7 8.b2-b4 Ne7-g6
Where did you find this? And is this a modern line? My main reference for openings currently is MCO 12 + 1982 edition of BCO + 1999 edition of NCO... lol...
And here I thought the Bc4 Qf6 was an aberration... I assumed you wouldn't see this too often since move 3 is a bit early to bring out the Q.

That is pretty much what I was looking for. My MCO only gives 4 columns for the Philador's... 3 ... Nf6, 3 ... Nd7, 3 ... ed4 and 3 ... f4, all of these as responses to 3 d4. Even my NCO recommends 3 ... Be7 after 3 Bc4, without a column for Bc4.
Time to invest in the newest MCO, methinks.
