I have a question about a match I am playing. I just had a pawn captured and I don't know how, or why. I want to know if it is legal, and if so why is it legal? I don't remember reading any rule about it, any help would be appreciated.

Game #965599

Alright, that's called En Passant. Go to this http://www.redhotpawn.com/help/index.php?help=enpassant, that should explain it.

I believe the answer to "why?" is because back in the day everyone used to spend their first two moves of the game moving the same Pawn twice. In order to speed up the game, they let Pawns jump two squares in their first move. However, this lets Pawns escape having to be captured by enemy Pawns which are on the enemy's fifth rank. As this was not the purpose of the two space movement rule, the en passant rule was added.
