A few hours ago, Iceland awarded Mr. Fischer citizenship of that country. This will of course lead to deportation to that country from Japan. Fischer will therefore become a resident of Iceland. I don't particularly care where Fischer goes, as long as it's not here (U.S.). The longer the U.S. pursues him, the more it appears like a vendetta. After all, who else has been convicted of dealings with the old Yugoslavia? It all seems so trumped up just to get him.
I agree that the US hasn't done itself any favours by persuing Fischer. Bobby was pretty much a forgotten soul. He had exhausted his only public outlet as nobody was really willing to put him on the air anymore. He was destined to live out his life quietly, which was probably best for all concerned.
Now, in addition to once again displaying questionable human rights practices, the US has again focused attention on Fischer. Also, it's going to be harder to dismiss him as just a crazy with a persecution complex when he really is being persecuted.
This is just another example of how the US, at least the current administration, seems to have the attitude that it has the power to whatever it wants, regardless of what truly wise council would indicate when it is that very power that makes it all the more important.
I should also suggest that, as Bobby Fischer's current situation has little to do with chess per se, this thread really belongs in the debates forum.
