He's only been hit on the head a little bit.

Honestly!

Kasparov is probably thinking chess is a lot safer than politics, especially in Russia. When I first saw the thread, I thought it was New York City, where muggings are not unusual, then I saw it was in Moscow. I don't think K. is very popular in conservative Russian politics, and he'd better be careful from now on. this could have just been a warning.

Politics? Somebody hit him over the head with a chessboard. Not exactly the brilliant work of political adversaries here. Sounds more like disgruntled chess fans mad at GK for retiring.

No it was political. It was at a meeting of political nature.
The chessboard was used as a prop to get closer because the perp was asking to have it autorgraphed. The guy who hit him was a member of the opposing party.

He just just be glad it wasnt dioxin.

Yea, it was political. I keep remembering what happened to Trotsky in Mexico. Only then it was an ice pick and not a chess board.

You mean, they have time to swing a chessboard without him seeing it coming, but nobody hid a knife under their jacket? Please. 🙄

Perhaps the idea was: if you can't beat Kasparov at chess, maybe you can beat him with it.

My money would have been on an extra-weighted King or a Bishop with a sharpened point.

ChessBase quotes a Kasparov interview where he states that he believes the point of the attack was to provoke members of his party. I guess if they beat him up it would give Putin supporters an excuse to crack down. They have the guy's name so they just let him go.
