It's amazing, isn't it - Kasparov has been ranked number one for so many years, and had the highest rating ever for so many years, and one of his main reasons for choosing to retire is the whole World Championship fiasco - without a "World Title" to fight for, there is nothing left to achieve.

It's easy to say that FIDE are to blame for the world championship (as we knew it) disintegrating, but Kasparov should at least take some of the blame - he did form his own championships after all in 1993...

People also seem to point their finger at Kramnik - but he's not the only "Champion" who has held onto his crown by avoiding competition - several of the recognised "World Champions" did it.

It's tempting to be cynical and suggest that Kasparov is announcing his retirement to help re-unify the world championships. What we really need is Kasparov to become the president of FIDE, and return the candidates system to it's historic format.

I guess I better go and order his books from Amazon before the price starts to go up !

I don't know quite what I did to the previous post... anyway - more of my thoughts on Kasparov's retirement are available in my blog at the following URL if you're interesting in reading it 🙂

Anyone ever heard of Michael Jordan?!

I would hate to think that G.K. will not play ever again. A real loss to the chess world.

NO! It was not about time!

This is a very sad thing to happen and it is NOT the same as Michael Jordan! Kasparov still has a lot to give!

A bummer too because although he just won at Linares, he will leave with a loss in his final professional game.

My opinion, Kasparov is the strongest player ever. It's too bad Kramnik didn't have the guts to give him another shot.

It's a big loss to the chess world ... but he's only given up professional chess, perhaps he'll join rhp!

I wonder just how much longer his career would have been without the infernal World Champion debacle.
Kasparov has dominated the ratings lists for so long his departure leaves somewhat of a vacuum. Will Anand be able to fill it?

I'm waiting for Nakamura to develop. At the pace he's on, he'll be challenging the big guys in a few years.

I've always been disappointed that Judit Polgar didn't reach W.C. level. Maybe with Kaspy gone she'll suddenly become stronger and win!

Bummer though. I'd have liked to see him spank Kramnik in a W.C. Tournament.

It is a shame Kasparov retired. I wish he had played Bobby Fischer. Now that would of been a match to see.
