I have to agree with Kasparov. The Kasparov vs Karpov rematch made news and appeared on the BBC, CNN etc. I hadn't been to the Chessbase site in a while and went to see details of the match.
I have not seen the regular players e.g. Anand, Kramnik, Leko, Topalov etc making the news the way KK do.
I doubt if you stopped people on the street they could te ...[text shortened]... obably not be able to tell you the boxing champ of the world too, boxing is in decline as well.
Hypothetical scenario: Topalov and seconds rehabilitate the Bird's defense to the Ruy. There's a complex plan that we've all missed until now and he starts scoring 80% with black. 1. e4 practically refuted, virtually disappears from master play in a few years.
This would be one of the greatest achievements in chess possible: yet there is no angle for the media to cover it. It would never make the news outside the chess world.
The KK event was well presented, the quick format made it easy to cover and a great live event. But in terms of actual chess played it is entirely forgettable.
Add to this that Kasparov may well be held at least partly responsible for the decline in chess (FIDE break, abysmal play against Deep Blue, etc) and I consider his remarks typical of one of the few things that rival the greatness of his chess talent: his ego.

I'd love to do a public test in the UK.
I forgot about Spassky I bet he would get a few mentions.
OK on Monday I have a job interview (so I'll be looking cute).
Just for you (and The Corner) I will take a millboard to Princes St.
and ask passers-by for one hour to name 3 famous chess players.
I will also ask them if they can name the current ...[text shortened]... ing just to find out what the non-coms think.
I'll post the results + pics on The Corner.
