lego do an excellent chess game for P.C. takes them through the very basics and has little scenarios when a piece is captured etc, my little boy loves this game even though he doesn't play chess that often.

When my kids were this age they didn't really get into playing on the screen so much (although they did enjoy the lego game mentioned above for a few games)....www.chesskids.com is good if you haven't been there already.

Also age 4 might be a bit young for chess. There is a risk that after "growing up" to be a big 5/6 year old they will look down on chess as a game for little ones...obviously all kids are different but this might be worth watching out for.
