Is it possible for a king and a knight (together in center of board) to hold off a checkmate from a king and a rook for 50 moves.

To be honest i cant be bothered thinking about it and im interested to know.

    Sure can. 🙂

King + rook has to force his opponent's king to move to certain squares where he can be checkmated but as long as you have your knight moving around he can resist. If you play it right.

To really test this out i just finished a game with fritz and after 50 moves even it couldn't checkmate me. If anyone could do it; fritz would, right? Although it's definitely possible if you don't play it exactly right. 🙂

p.s. if you need more proof. Open a blitz game and see if you can checkmate me. (With King/rook vs. King/Knight)

Not this exact position but it really doesn't matter where you are, though. He still needs to force you into the back or side rank and his king also needs to be right in front of yours (for example, if your king is on "c1" his king will have to be on c3) unless you are on a1,h1,a8,h8. He will have very difficult of a time to do that if you use your knight to counter him.

We can open a rhp blitz game if you like and you can see if you can checkmate me in 50 moves?

The game is already over hammster. 83 h6 was opponent's last move.

    66b (opponent took his knight)
    83b (ra6-h6 checkmate)

This is a stone cold draw. Black can make no meaningful progress at all. K+R v K+N is a draw in all but a few exceptional positions where the stronger side can set up mating threats or force the win of the opponent's knight.
