although I am a relative beginner, I have (according to others) picked the game very well. I now want to look at specific openings to play around with. one that has caught my eye is the KIA. Does any here use this and can he/she give me some idea of the overall theme, key points about piece positions etc ??
thanks in advance

It's a useful way of playing against various Black semi-open defences to 1.e4 (that is, systems other than 1...e5 - and 1...d5 I suppose 🙂 ).
Plus points:
- Consistent piece set up, with fairly consistent plans so there is no need to study seperate varioations against the French and Sicilian.
- Good chances for a Kside attack.
Downside:
- The flexibility means that you need a good level of understanding of a number of positions to play it at a high level
- Not the sharpest anti-Sicilian line going. I think most people feel it is better against the French.
