I could have sworn that I learned how to do a knight tour back to the starting square in an odd number of moves. This would be used to effectively lose a tempo in an end game where opposition is a problem. The problem is I can't figure out how to do it. This situation isn't happening in any of my games right now but would love to remember. Anyone able to help me? Given a Knight on E4 how can I get the knight back to E4 in an odd number of moves? The shorter the better

e4 is a white square. By the nature of the way a knight moves it must swap colour every move.
So after moving once it will be on a black square. After two moves it will be on a white square. This pattern continues.

Therefore you can't reach e4 (or any other white square) in an odd number of moves.

Break the board into four aquares and try to have it touch every square once and never the same twice. The old puzzle that was proven could happen. The knight can touch all squares on the board only once but must touch them all. To answer this try doing it with only 1/4 of the board.

I know this is totally off kilter to your question, but if you do that it will give you the answer of how to use the knight to circle. And as xanthos points out you will end on the opposite color on an odd move, therefore you will be in a different position.

From an attacking move to a defensive move in odd number moves.

I hope this makes some sense.

After some thought what I remember learning was losing a tempo with your king by returning to the same square in 3 moves instead of 2 moves. Sorry for anyone who tried to solve this question.
