There are no spelling mistakes. Except if you were looking at favorites. I think that's how it's spelt in America and Canada.

In online tourneys I'm sure everyone does. And most of the top players do that for every unfamiliar opponent. As for us patzers? who cares about openings when we're losing tactically.
