At first, I had no favourites. I liked both Kramnik and Topalov. However, after Topalov started playing dirty and refused to apologize and replay Game 5, I started rooting for Kramnik.

I'm very happy with the result and the amazing moves from both sides. 🙂

Don't be sad my friend. By the end of 2007 the US, Canada and Mexico are going to be one union. Yeah, haven't you heard? It's called The North American Alliance. Under their plan we'll all just be brothers and sisters under one rule.

I too wanted Topalov to win, because I prefer his style of play -
BUT a very BIG congratulations to Kramnik lets hope the next WCC will be just as exciting (and a few e4s would be good too)

At the start I wanted Topalov to win, his style of play is kinky.....but Kramniks composure and willingness to play on won my support despite his style of chess which isnt really to my liking.

The question is what does Topalov do from here to try and restore his fanbase if thats even possible, if he had of just replayed game 5 and then lost he would have wide public support at the moment he certainly seems to lack that.

It is quite sad that most people like exciting and aggressive chess, and hence wanted Topalov to win. Don't know what was Topalov thinking when he pulled that toilet complaint stunt which resulted in practically the whole world turning against him!

At the end of the day, Kramnik is simply a better player than Topalov. A comment I made before the rapid games yesterday was that Kramnik was able to use his time efficiently over the 12 (11) games. Sure he appeared to be suffering time pressure, but actually he wasn't. He commented that he saw no real sense in making fast mediocre moves to upset your opponent's rythm.

Topalov is a good player no doubt, but making fast moves to intimidate Kramnik isn't a very good strategy. Kramnik was unimpressed and remained calm throughout.

And then when it mattered most, Kramnik turned out to be a better rapid chess player. So right now positional/defensive chess rules. Topalov has to do something more than playing fast/aggressive.

Why is it sad that people like exciting chess?

If positional/defensive chess rules then I hope that the next WCC is not between Kramnik and another player of the same style as himself.

Although i congratulate Kramnik on winning, and he deserved to in the end, much of the appeal of the match was made by Topalov's style of always looking for a win even in "safe/drawn" positions.
Kramnik v Kramnik would have possibly produced fewer blunders but also less interesting games IMHO

🙂
Thank you

You misunderstood me. The sadness is not on people liking aggressive chess; rather people supported Topalov for his style of play, but because of the toilet scandal, his supporters eventually turned against him. That is the sad part of it.

Obviously it is exciting to see aggressive chess. But at the end of the day, to be a world champion, it's the winning that counts! Lots of people have said that Topalov is better prepared. Apparently they're saying that he has introduced novelties in the games, some of which have been successful against Kramnik. Kramnik was put under pressure playing against well-prepared moves. Well, I guess that is one way one can judge a better player.

But I consider the better player by the results of the games. I don't really care what actually happened in those games. In the end, if one were to just concentrate on the results, Kramnik was very much in the driver's seat. Throughout the entire championship, as far as score was concerned, Kramnik was the one who's leading. Topalov could only managed the even up at best (with the help of game 5 which Kramnik didn't play).

“The regulations of the World Chess Federation allows each world champion, who has lost the title to extend an invitation for a new match. The sum of EUR 1.5 million has to be provided as an award. We will find the money and will demand that the match take place in Sofia. We will even propose the date March 3rd, 2007”

But Topalov wasn't world champion he was the FIDE champion.

I think Topalov should have to play candidates matches like everyone else, maybe that would take him down a peg.

Just curious if anyone knows if there's been any adjustments on the rating of Topalov/Kramnik now that the championship is over. Should Kramnik's rating be higher? After all, he's supposed to be the best player in the world today?

Yayyyyyyyyyyyy! Chess is saved by this result! I just went through a 6.5 on the richter scale earthquake here in Hawaii, so I couldn't really look into the results until now.

Topalov probably ruined his fan-base forever.
