Learn from the master experience.
Go over master games.
Go over master annotated games.
Play through master games.
Play through master annotated games.
Go over your games.
Annotate your games.
Play through your annotated games afterwards.
Suddenly, you'll be learning to make the right moves, for the right
reasons, rather than making the move which looks least dangerous.
Its amazing how it "Clicks" when you start playing with ideas, instead
of imitating and guessing.

I don't want to give the impression that I play completely by intuition. I do have some material which has proven quite helpful, namely 303 tricky chess tactics and Chess Mentor software.
I've just been musing lately that chess is like a symphony where the object is to be the conductor. But too often I feel like I'm playing to someone else's tune.
