Odysseus' Gambit is a short (12 minute) documentary film about Saravuth Inn,
a Cambodian man (he survived the Khmer Rouge) who fell upon hard times
(he graduated from Rutgers University) and became destitute and homeless.
At the time of the film, he played chess for money in New York City's Union Square.

Obviously, I am referring to films with a significant chess theme or number of scenes with chess.
The number of films with at least one brief scene involving a chessboard would be too many to list.

Please feel free to add more films from 2017 onward to this list.
(But don't criticize the list for not including films after it was made.)

They sometimes played 3-D chess in some of the TV Star Trek episodes, but that probably does not count.

Does anyone in real life even play that? I looked it up once but it made my head hurt just trying to figure it out. I have enough trouble just trying to play regular chess!

Tragically, four years after he starred in the film 'Chess Fever', Vladimir Fogel committed suicide.

The OP indicates a "List of Films With Chess Scenes".
The adding of the post-2017 parameter is excessively limiting and nonsensical.

Upon reading this thread's title; Ingmar Bergman's "The Seventh Seal" (1957) immediately came to mind.

Note that Wolfe63 has been recently (again) running around in various forums hurling insults at me.

It was important to note that the list ends with films released in 2017 (not later)
because I hoped to preempt complaints by ignorant people to the effect of
"The list is terrible because it does not mention "The Queen's Gambit ' ".
Of course, that miniseries was not shown until after the list was made.

Given the common near illiteracy of writers here, however, some of them may just
ignore the qualification of 2017 and rant about the omission of "The Queen's Gambit" anyway.

"The Seventh Seal" is ALREADY in the list.

    @Duchess64

Have to say, Wolfe's post puzzled me too.

Surely Max Von Sydow playing chess vs Death is THE iconic chess scene in a film.

And was, of course, on the list
