The alternative is to leave the game as well, and you may lose a won game (it isn't about the rating). In blitz it isn't a big deal to wait some minutes; you can do something else and just keep an eye on the clock.

Even then at FICS I've had my time go negative and no flag fall, even if I check the flag. I think it is a bug.
