Any recommendations on a good chess program for a PC? Ideally I'd like something that has a lot of the standard openings (none of which I could ever master) I could practice against.

Anyone have any exceptionally good or bad experiences with a chess program?

I'd appreciate any help in this.

Don't mess around. Get Fritz. A version is not sold in department stores in U.S.A. It's the software all others are measured against. Don't get software that offers you hundreds of outlandish looking chessmen or animated pieces and the clash and clang of battle. Or 3d men you need special glasses and a bottleful of asprin to see. Fritz and his brethren (Shredder, Hiarcs, etc.) are the rolls royces of the chessworld. It's a German product. I'm from the U.S.A., but I take my hat off to the Saxon designersof this little gem. Oh, and don't get the one with Kasparov squinting out of the box. It just isn't any good either.
