I bought Flear's Offbeat Spanish slightly used from John Donaldson, who claimed to hold the writer in high regard. I liked it and subsequently bought The Ruy Lopez Main Line from a local independent bookstore that generally has a decent selection of chess books. Offbeat Spanish has been my companion through several correspondence games in which I've deployed the Berlin Defense as black.

Unlike some opening books, such as the "Winning with ..." series, Flear's books look at the opening from both sides.

its good when a book can do that because you can understand the opening from either side and notice the goals and how to prevent them etc. thanks for your help.

one of the things that set me over the top for the book was that i went to a respectable website and it has a section and you can look for books for certain ratings. so i put in books from 1600 to 2000 and then i entered in the books that we've mentioned and found them so i thought they may be some use to me.
