just got a gift certificate to a book store and am wondering which book i should get. i am going to buy mastering the najdorf but i still have enough for another book. does anyone know of a good book on the ruy lopez? and if not do you know any good books on the italian opening. thanks.

I have Mastering the Spanish (Batsford Chess Library) by Daniel King & Pietro Ponzetto and liked it. this book divides the opening in different pawn formations that can arise from Ruy Lopez (for example Marshall Center) and give the usual tactical motifs, strategic plans etc.
however, I'd really recommend Masters of the Chess Board by Richard Reti. It has many games in Italian opening and Ruy Loepez plus it more or less shows how the game has evolved from 1800 to 1920.

I'd agree with bahus. I've the King/Ponzetto book. There is a huge amount of theory around the Spanish and to cover it all would be very time consuming. Starting off, it would be better to learn the ideas behind the opening and the various positions you come across. Mastering the Spanish does this very well and is quite understandable.
Why don't you try a good general purpose opening bible like Batsford Modern Chess Openings. Use this to decide which openings suit your style and you enjoy and then buy the more detailed specialised books.
B-MCO gives reasonable coverage of all the main lines of the Ruy Lopez just without the detailed explanations.

if it's not to a chess specific bookstore...then you don't have much of a selection anyways...
i really dont know any opening books for the ones you are interested in, sorry
Amazon.com is the place to go though. 🙂
From what I've seen, there aren't any really great books on the Ruy - tell me if you find one though, because I'm looking for one.

the only good books that I've found at Borders are Reassess Your Chess and The Amateur's Mind. The rest I bought at WholesaleChess.com

Amateur's Mind, Mikhail Tal, Tactics book, Pandolfini's Endgame Course, Art of Attack, maybe even a couple of others.
amazon and barnes and noble online are pretty good. i don't know how good the books i'm buying but they were made in 2004 so they are at least up to date. if a grandmaster can generally show me the correct play and the plans i can go from there i know the plans its just hard for me to understand it without being explained to. i get an advantage but can't capitalize on it.
