I haven't been playing long compared to most so I was wondering if eventually do you get to the point where losing a winning game doesn't make you angry.

Losing in itself used to make me angry. Now losing usually doesn't bother me. But if I lose a winning game, especially on the internet, I still get very angry.

Is this something I may have to deal with as long as I play chess or is this just a phase and eventually it won't bother me anymore? What's your experience. I'm especially interested with the experiences of those who are like me and have an anger response to frustration.

Works well with sports. Not so well in other places.

I get upset with myself, especially if I blunder away the win. Some blunders are very subtle, others are quite huge. I get angrier at the subtle blunders. I got the angriest losing by running out of time despite having enormous material advantage in a blitz game. Draws upset me more than losses, however. I don't know why. Especially allowing a draw when ahead in material. Eventually you stop getting mad. After all, it is just a board game. Unless you make money off of chess there is no intrinsic value to it although it does help keep your mind sharp.

My friend, everyone, without exception (name any World champion you like, you'll find a game) loses a won game from time to time! Chess is the most frustrating game ever invented. SO many things affect your play. Lack of sleep, a hangover, bad diet, too much coffee....etc....

There is no need to be angry, there is only one thing to learn and that is to only make moves when you know you are at your best. SOoooo many times i have come back from the pub and thrown a few moves out just cos i wanted to. These are the times i that i lost a game from a won position!! Beer+Whisky+Kebab+Chess=BLUNDER!!! 😛

You will lose games you should have won.

You will win games you should have lost.

When you lose one you should have won,

remember the one you should have lost.

And by the time you have figured that out you will forgotten all about it.

The anger doesn't last. At home I let out a let out a few loud statements and two seconds later the anger is completely gone. As I said, it is the rare loss that causes this kind of response.

Really, I'm getting quite used to losing. Either do that or go crazy. If it was a well played game and I didn't feel like I enjoyed a clearly superior postion, I have no problem with the loss.

I quite enjoy winning lost games. So I know this is a two sided knife. After the emotional response, I'm really OK with it. I was just wondering if anyone with a similar response can tell me if I'll ever get past it.

But then again, perhaps I just need to have a beer near by just like when I watch certain sports games. 😉

GP, as usual, puts it quite aptly. We win games we should have lost and lose games we should have won. Part of life. Chess would be quite boring without the huge blunders even the greatest players make/made. Fischer Vs. Petrosian, Bled 1962. Look up the game, Eladar, it is a gem of a blunder by Petrosian. Makes me feel better about my own blunders. Fool's comfort perhaps, but comfort nonetheless!

Just check White's last move at this drawish game Game 6030825; today it's my birthday, and this is the unfortunate fruit of some champaigne early around midday.

Somebody shoot me please😵

I feel your pain! Happy birthday! You may get compensation from theuniverse in some other manner. Never imbibe and play, however. Makes your brain mushy! Also don't play with the flu. I did that once. Worse than OH radicals on the brain. Not much of a drinker so the latter radicals are never an excuse for me. just plain, unadulterated stupidity on my part.

If you pick up Chess for Dummies (a great book for very beginners), toward the back they have a section with the top ten worst losers and they're all high profile games, some from long, long ago. I wish I could remember all of them because they were hilarious. Here's a couple.

One guy resigned by picking up his king a hurling it across the room.

One guy said outloud, "why must I lose to this idiot!?"

One guy lost because he accidentally dropped his queen on an unintended square. He broke into the building the tournament was being held in that night and cut off the heads of all the queens.

Happy birthday my friend. May you and your beloved Maria live a long life full of joy and happiness.
I see that long games can be exhausted even in correspondence chess. Never mind. Think that some of us do not need 90 moves to make a brilliant blunder.
My RHP gift to you is my latest blunder (until the next one of course). Look at black’s 21st move on Game 6099048. I could not consider a different form of self punishment other than immediate resignation.

🙂

Indeed being a good sport is a must, for anyone to win someone must lose. No one can win every game and if we only had draws chess would be insipidly boring. By the paratrooper dude, congrats on your first win! Ulysses, why resign. Behind two pawns and not a terrible position?

I believe the second one, "why must I lose to this idiot?", was Nimzovitch, after losing to Saemisch
