Lucena's position (late 15th century) is a classic endgame study (has become theory since) showing how to win with an advanced pawn in a rook endgame. A typical King maneuvre that is worth to be known.

White pieces: King b8, pawn b7, Rook d2
Black pieces: King e7, Rook a1

White plays and wins: 1.Rd4 Ra2 2.Kc7 Rc2+ 3.Kb6 Rb2+ 4.Kc6
White threathens now 5.Rd5 followed by Rb5.
Therefor black plays 4....Rc2+ 5.Kb5 Rb2+ 6.Rb4 wins.

Mephisto.

This one possible position. W. Kd8, Rf1, Pd7; B. Kg7, Rc2. White has to build "a bridge" to prevent Black from checking his King. Played correctly White will win.πŸ˜‰ Langtree.
