If it was adult or young adult, then you'll get 12 issues a year, and you should be getting one soon. (It might take about a month or a little longer for your membership to get into the magazine mailing cycle.)
If it was youth membership, you'll get 6 Chess Life issues per year.
And if it was scholastic membership, you'll get 6 issues per year of Chess Life For Kids.
If you got one of the 6 issue memberships, I'd guess that your wait for a magazine might be up to 2 months or a little longer.

The mag doesn't have as many puzzles as it used to, but Solitaire Chess is fun and instructive, and then you have Pal Benko's End Game Lab. Lev Alburt has a great section for beginners to intermediate players. If you have your USCF ID already, then you can log onto uschess.org. That is where the bulk of the magazine exists now. Lots of puzzles and interest stories. It's definately a great suppliment to Chess Life.
So, allow me to welcome you to the USCF. Things are a bit disorganized at the moment, but membership is higher than it's been in three years, and hopefully our new Executive Board will sort Chess out in America (with the help of members like us). Take care.
