Some interesting points
"learned the rules quickly, and they could capture a piece, but to get two or more pieces working together, which is what chess is about, this spatial vision took a long time"
"recalls her son sitting for hours with puzzles or making advanced Lego models, patiently working his way through pages and pages of instructions meant for children a decade older. "He had the ability to sit for a very long time, even when he was small"

Thumbs up by me! I have two little girls, and this is a very interesting read.
How old are they and have you started teaching them? I have a 5 year old son. I taught him how to setup the board 2 years back. Now, in last one month, I have taught him about chess pieces, how they move and capture, check, checkmate. I can play a game with him, and now he is excited to play with me all the time!
Originally posted by vishyanand11 and 7. My older daughter could set up the pieces before she was two, but has not really been interested since. My 7 year old has just become interested in the last 6 months, and she is coming along. She is much more competitive than her sister, and that is the difference.
