...to all you guys I have played lately. My game has gotten so much better in large part to the high level of competition I am getting here. I had a very strong day at chess club last night and I moved up one spot on the board after a 4-0 night. One of the guys I swept yesterday was a tournament player that skunked me badly when I first started club chess six months ago. I just wanted you all to know you rock!

I have seen the same phenomenon in otb chess. Since CC involves consulting databases and learning how to cope with unusual situations, I have found that over here, and other CC websites where I play, that I need to improve my openings repertoire. For instance, I had to deal with a guy that played 1.b4 against me (pansy) [ 1. b4 Ng8f6 2. Bc1b2 g6 3. c4 Bf8g7 4. d4 O-O 5. Ng1f3 d6 6. Nb1d2 a5
7. b5 Nb8d7 ] These moves are no coincidence as I studied a nice game by Bronstein:

[Event "USA-URS radio m"]
[Site "Soviet Union"]
[Date "1945.09.01"]
[Round "2"]
[White "Santasiere,Anthony Edward"]
[Black "Bronstein,David I"]
[Result "0-1"]
[Eco "A05"]
1.Nf3 Nf6 2.b4 d6 3.d4 g6 4.c4 Bg7 5.Bb2 0-0 6.Nbd2 a5 7.a3 e5 8.dxe5 Nfd7 9.e3 Nc6 10.Qb3 axb4 11.axb4 Rxa1+ 12.Bxa1 Ncxe5 13.Bc3 c5 14.Be2 Qf6 15.Ne4 Qe7 16.Bxe5 Nxe5 17.bxc5 dxc5 18.0-0 Bg4 19.Ned2 Nc6 20.Rd1 Nb4 21.Nb1 Qf6 22.Na3 Ra8 23.Nd4 Bxe2 24.Nxe2 Qb2 25.Qxb2 Bxb2 26.Nb5 Nc6 27.Rb1 Ra4 28.Ng3 Be5 29.f4 Bg7 30.Nd6 Rb4 31.Rc1 f5 32.e4 Bd4+ 33.Kh1 Be3 34.Rf1 Na5 35.exf5 Nxc4 36.Nxc4 Rxc4 37.fxg6 hxg6 38.f5 g5 39.f6 Rc1 40.Rxc1 Bxc1 41.Ne4 c4 42.g4 Bf4 43.Kg2 b5 44.Kf3 b4 45.h4 c3 46.hxg5 c2 47.Kxf4 c1=Q+ 48.Kf5 Qc8+ 49.Kf4 b3 50.g6 b2 0-1

Now, the whole process of consulting the database, deciding what to do, and saving the game in a binder contributed to learn this opening and some of the variations that are born from it... Conceptually speaking Bronstein's game is very thematic. The same goes for other openings where I have had disasters here in CC that averted defeats in OTB... So, summarizing, CC chess is good to construct a theoretical apparatus and implementing it over the board.
