...to all you guys I have played lately. My game has gotten so much better in large part to the high level of competition I am getting here. I had a very strong day at chess club last night and I moved up one spot on the board after a 4-0 night. One of the guys I swept yesterday was a tournament player that skunked me badly when I first started club chess six months ago. I just wanted you all to know you rock!
Originally posted by KWCoronaI have seen the same phenomenon in otb chess. Since CC involves consulting databases and learning how to cope with unusual situations, I have found that over here, and other CC websites where I play, that I need to improve my openings repertoire. For instance, I had to deal with a guy that played 1.b4 against me (pansy) [ 1. b4 Ng8f6 2. Bc1b2 g6 3. c4 Bf8g7 4. d4 O-O 5. Ng1f3 d6 6. Nb1d2 a5

7. b5 Nb8d7 ] These moves are no coincidence as I studied a nice game by Bronstein:
[Event "USA-URS radio m"]
[Site "Soviet Union"]
[Date "1945.09.01"]
[Round "2"]
[White "Santasiere,Anthony Edward"]
[Black "Bronstein,David I"]
[Result "0-1"]

Now, the whole process of consulting the database, deciding what to do, and saving the game in a binder contributed to learn this opening and some of the variations that are born from it... Conceptually speaking Bronstein's game is very thematic. The same goes for other openings where I have had disasters here in CC that averted defeats in OTB... So, summarizing, CC chess is good to construct a theoretical apparatus and implementing it over the board.
