first time i got a mate like this

🙂
That mate is called Legall's mate. I did that move on a friend of mine in one of my games. However, in my case, it was a bad move, because I was risking losing a knight, if my friend did not take the bait. However, since I knew who I was playing, I took the risk, and won the game.

To my eternal shame and disgrace I not only stuffed up the Petroff (should be 3. ... d6) but then continued to fail to focus. Clearly I should not have been playing that night, I quit for the rest of the evening.

Schakuhr, with 400 points on me, I wouldn't play the Dutch against you if someone paid me MONEY! ;-) The Dutch is definitely a defense that allows for major screwups early, if you're not fully familiar with it.

As to the 2 Bg5 move, I used 3 Bg5 in this game, though the outcome took a while:

What I particularly liked was the e5-e6-e7 pawn advance beginning move 18. I may have misplayed my advantage, as my opp's 30 ... Bc8 move was brilliant--except for that, I had him roasted, sliced and served. Still made out okay, though.

Hey! Doesn't Kf7 hold the position? If Bc4+, d5! If Qxe4, Nf6!

It probably wouldn't have saved the game, but it would have made things interesting, anyway! ;-)

It holds the position yes, but white keeps the advantage. Black might have problems developing, while white can do so freely.

I've never seen this before in a real game, and after his second move I did stare very hard at the monitor before moving:
