So there I was, a rook up, and nearing checkmate. I thought I'd be clever, and put him in zugzwang (30 ... Rb4) - any move allows mate, but I can't mate until he moves. Very pretty, huh?

    However, it wasn't until afterwards that I spotted that 31 Rxg7+!! draws! 31 ... Kf8 32 Rg8+! (not 32 Rxf7+?? Qxf7 and the king has moves again) 32 ... Ke7 33 Re8+ Kd7 34 Rd8+ Kc7 35 Rc8+ Kb6 36 36 Rxc6+! (36 Rb8+?? Kc5 and I escape the checks) followed by checking on c6, c7, and c8. There is no escape, and any capture of the rook with the king is stalemate!

Hmm, if black king tries to go to a8, then a Rc8+ can be protected by Rb8 and no more check is possible, and the white king is free...

But apart from this - when you notice that your king moves are limited to none, then it might be a good idea to get rid of those pieces that have moves. Sometimes you can get out of a game with a glorius draw.

Good point! I'm disappointed I didn't spot it, but pleased that it's there!

if nothing else proof that you should play on just to see... would've been a nice draw.

I had a "Eureka" moment in the car on the way to work this morning; it is a draw, even if the King goes to the a-file!

White rook cannot ever go to the a7, b6, nor the c5 squares, as it will immediately be taken with the black queen.

I don't think there is a draw anywhere. But if you can fool your opponent into believing that, you're lucky. Or skilled. Nothing bad in trying.
