Why is it that weak players make bad moves?
Is it that we do not know a good move even if it bit us in the butt?
Is it that we fail to see the weakness we just created?
Is it that we get distracted by other weaker moves that look pretty good.
Is it that we don't know what we should be doing? Attacking with no good reason...failing to develop...moving a pawn hoping not to make a mistake?
What prevents people from making good moves?

I'll add another: sheer laziness. "Oh, that move looks pretty good, so I won't bother calculating." I'm guilty of this one often.
Originally posted by @eladarYou have some good reasons, another I would add our beloved royal game is somewhat complicated. You can check out the numbers on youtube (see link below) So study, concentrate, and play over your finished games with stronger players who can help coach you, but don't beat yourself up if your not doing well. It gets complicated very quickly!

Maybe it is a misunderstanding of chess which is the problem. Most people, including myself, believe the purpose of chess is to checkmate your opponent.
In fact the purpose of chess is to work the board into a position which will allow you to checkmate your opponent.

...back on topic. I think we are weak because we don't know what to do with our position. We can't read it properly. So we come up with a lame plan when a better player finds the right plan.
Not many who actually know the right plan, not many if any at all.
