That's true, paradoxical but true. People do have a tendency to play down to the level of the opponent. i.e. when you see sloppy play, your play gets sloppier. I guess you think, "I've got nothing to worry about with this guy, so i can play loose and sloppy too." One thing i've noticed is that the really good players, the ones that hover around 2000 here, don't play sloppy no matter who they play. They are patient, choose the best moves in the position, and wait. Sooner or later a player like me,throwing out moves like a madman, will make sometimes an inferior move. That's where the 2000 player will pounce and refute it precisely. Once I'm in an inferior position they will turn the screws relentlessly until something in the position cracks wide open. They take their time about it. And when its all over and you ask them for advice, they'll gladly give it objectively, but not until asked. They are invariable polite, considerate--no hysterical ramblings or insults. They let their game do their talking.
