Excuse my ignorance of this but, what exactly is a traxler game?

The position at move 5 is called the traxler.

Also called the Wilkes-Barre but, I have also always prefered the name Traxler. This is one of my favorite defenses in OTB play but, I seem to struggle with on internet Chess. Here is my only Traxler game here on RHP:

My first, only and last Traxler game: Game 4379422

I remember, after the opening moves, looking at the position and thinking: well... now I'm a pawn down and my king is bothering the development of my other pieces. What have I done?

I was lucky to get out alive.
