I just noticed this position on some scratch notes from an old game of mine (Game 3629433, completed 2 years ago):

After 38 ... Nc3

What is my (Black's) reply to 39 g5? Did I miss that possibility or would I have been OK? Can Black avoid losing the bishop, or can Black get a better position in exchange for the bishop? Thanks.

My friend, I think you really did just miss it. It's why we have the Olympics with people running in spite of the existence of cars, we swim in spite of the existence of boats, and and women's weight lifting instead of...(Ok, I don't have an answer for that one)- it is our limitations and imperfections that make us appreciate the best performance among us.

The more people who perform an activity, the more we appreciate who comes in first.
