Gyula Breyer, a leader of the hypermodern movement in the 20's, annotated 1.p-e4 thusly: "with this premature bid for control of the center, white's game is in it's death throes".

OK, I'm not one to side with Paul on this, but why are you guys playing an analyzed non rated French game? It's probably the most boring opening around, and devoid of tactics, there simply isn't much to analyze. This opening closes things up so much, that peices become obsolete. Still, I guess it's an educational experience on how position can win to these king gambiteers.

You are completely wrong....gimme a couple seconds to find some games to make this stereotypical opinion look foolish.

I'm tired of playing the Winawar or the Steinitz, the Advance Variation is stuffy, and I really don't wish to listen to mateulose's incessant whining. (Kidding, mate. Kidding.)

Here's a quote from another grandmaster from the 20's, Akiba Rubenstein: "dooOO00D, the French Defense is teh suck, people who play it are teh fux0r3d" Rubenstein was one of the top 5 players in the world at the time, so he must have known what he was talking about.

It's true! Since Rubenstein said that over 80 years ago, he was obviously far ahead of his time and was a true visionary. Too bad he stopped playing chess shortly after, because he lived until 1961!! (Mostly in and out of nuthouses)
