Silman's 'The Amateur Mind' is good. For beginners i would recommend Seirawan's 'Winning Chess Strategy'.
Silman also has a workbook which is all about coming up with the right plan for a given position but i've not read it yet.

Anybody know of a good chessbook that teaches one to come up with a plan according to the position one has?
Not talking about tactics, but how to assess the position and come up with a 'correct' plan following that assessment.
Many thanks!

This book has well chosen things to look for and plan for in a position, and has clear examples.
After that try
My System: 21st Century Edition
by Aron Nimzowitsch, Lou Hays
This is more advanced, but has more things to look for and try. It is now easier to read than it used to be, now that algebraic notation is used.

If you want to watch a grandmaster think out loud as he calculates, the video '20:20 Calculation' by Daniel King is interesting.
Personally, I really dislike Silman's books so often recommended by others. I expect you have already read them. Same reason we discussed earlier; in my opinion, Silman doesn't understand how people learn.
