and thanks for keeping it with things you can actually DO...so much of the advice is theoretical or conditional...it's helpful to have something specific to work on.

I don't think you should be too worried about the opening at your level. When I was a kid I went to a chess club and most lessons were devoted to tactics, study them. I'm in the 1500s and most of my games are still lost because I made a stupid tactical blunder.
