Okay I'm new here. How do I go I go about finding an opponent of my own skill level who wants to play a game that will last no more than about an hour? I'm not the kind to get involved in long commitments, just looking for a game or two per evening, played successively. I wanna play against a "live", attentive opponent who will play continuously until the game is done, taking no more than maybe five minutes per move. Is that common here or have I come to the wrong place? Help!

Look at the "play blitz" in the upper right corner. But if you want live games, better alternative is FICS (free internet chess server) ; www.freechess.org

Redhotpawn is correspodence chess site, fastest game is 1 day per move and altough you and your opponent are free to move faster, you can not count on that.
