I was thinking about getting a new set.
I've seen the Staunton Pro-Line (ebonised) for £75 & like the classic Staunton style.

Has anyone got this set or can suggest something similar - with links if possible?

I think the exchange rate is a little under 2.0, so that would be closer to $150 in USD. also keep in mind that if he buys outside of his country, he'll have to pay higher shipping charges.

This is interesting. I was going to mention which HOS sets I prefer, but looking at the HOS sets on the link you gave, and also the HOS site and the Wholesale Chess site, it appears that HOS is in the process of updating a number of their designs. The Classic Rosewood design shown on the Chessmaze link seems to be a newer design than the Classic set that I got from HOS not long ago. And I think I prefer the older design. (Although, who knows, maybe in time the new design would grow on me.)

Also, the Reykjavik II design on the Chessmaze link seems to be the older design, which I like more than the newer design. Wholesale Chess appears to be selling the newer Reykjavik II design.

Also, HOS puts up these sets on eBay here in the USA, and they often sell for considerably less than the retail price. But you'd have to pay higher shipping, I'm sure.

My biggest concern with buying a HOS set right now would be that you get either the old or new design that you're expecting to get. I know with my preference for the older designs, I'd be pissed if I was expecting an old design and got a new design instead (or vice-versa).

If you get an ebonized set and use it very heavily, the ebonizing will eventually show wear spots, whereas you wouldn't have that problem with a rosewood set (and or course, an ebony set). Also, there's a size issue - The Pro-Line design is a little larger in height and diameter than the Reykjavik design.

I bought a nice set in Innsbruck for less than 50 euro. I think if you go to or know someone going to a country where chess is really popular you may get a better deal.
