To avoid automatic thoughtless following of the opening book, it is good idea to look for good opening moves without it, pick your 4 or 5 candidate moves, explain to yourself your reasons and only then you look at the database. It is probably very good exercise. At the end you make a good database move but not before you can understand it !
I started to play this way and ussualy my moves are on the list of the good moves with many games and good scorings in games that took that line...
