Cheating or no, chess organizations are doing it a lot these days. I was informed that the Washington Open and Senior Open are going to be on line, and I expect many others will as well. Regarding cheating - I know it goes on sometimes, and I have no wish to lose to an engine, but I'd still rather do that than watch the endless garbage on TV.
Many sporting events have been cancelled due to the current pandemic. The Tour de Swiss (cycling), to name only one. Chess is one sport which can be played remotely, hence the on-line tournament.
lichess.org seems to have a pretty good algorithm for detecting and removing cheats. I have even had them give me rating points back once they discover I was beaten by a cheater.

I can second the nod on lichess. It generally seems to be a well-run place.
