I just stumbled on this rather good looking site...

http://www.chesslecture.com/index.php?pc=ficsfreevideo

Has anyone here subscribed to this? I watched the free lecture, which was aimed at the novice. It seemed a good way of learning, i just wondered if anyone knows if the lectures provided to subscribers provide a good resource for mid-strong players?

I had a subscription for one month and I watched quite a few videos there. Personally I didn't like some authors style to give a long introductions before actual material. Some authors also had very annoying style to talk very slowly with quiet, soft tone. Most of the material was good, but you really need to watch videos several times and download pgn's to get most out of them. As you can except, quality of videos varies from very poor to excelent.

I'm quite certain that watching these videos while being fun, isn't going to improve your game very much.

Have seen the Icc lectures on chess.fm?

If you have, how do the two compared?

I wasch a bit of the free on that website but I like the Icc lectures more.

I just started a subscription. Each working day they add one additional lecture. Most of them around 1/2 hour. They range from beginners to experts. So far, i've liked them. They've built up quite a few lectures over the month (approximately 130) and there's something to interest everyone--from endgame, middle game and specific openings. I've written to them to suggest a series of lectures and they answered back immediately. How do they compare to ICC lectures? About the same, only they're lots more of them so there is a much bigger range. YOu can repeat them as often as possible. It costs 12 buck a month, which isn't cheap, but it's easy to bow out by cancelling your subscription. Some of the narrators i like more than others and they can get wordy. Maybe they're trying to stretch the content. I don't know. Nothing so far to really turn me off, so i don't turn them off. Some sample lectures: Evans Gambit for White, Fischer V. Larsen (game), Halloween Gambit, Mating Basics, king and rook v. king(beginners), Balance of Time, Material, and Quality of Position (Paul Morphy v. Duke Karl), and many many more. I'd recommend you try it for a month and decide from there.

Sounds great. The problem with ICC lectures is that they might come out every 2 weeks but it must have to do with the price. $12 a month compared to $50 about for Icc a year.

The sample lecture on their website, is it always the same or do they change it everyday?

The obvious advantage on ICC compared with chess lecture is that you can play live chess. chess lecture is a study tool, so you can't just compare price. Believe it or not i like them because they're only about half hour each. i tend to nod off during these two hour deals from ICC. it always seems like the icc narrator is more taken with himself than the subject of the lecture. somehow chess lecture seems more intimate, casual. also, they seem to have the same lecture over at icc on for years. as i said, chess lecture has over 130 and you can repeat as often as you like. the program checks off the ones you've seen automatically.

That's true about the price. I signed up again for my 2 free weeks at ICC to see the new lectures. I see 3 new lectures from Pete as usual and the other 3 people have the same lectures they had 3 months ago. So 3 new lectures in 3 months at ICC.

I noticed on fics that one of the bots was giving a lecture similar to MrSpock on ICC. I never knew fics also had that. Maybe they have some other events which I don't know about like lectures and simuls?
