Has anyone ever heard of any rule relating to having to mate an opponent in ten moves while only having their king left? It sounds familiar..

I have heard of that rule, but it is not includet in the official FIDE set. So you have to agree on that one if you want to use it (and ion RHP and other online chess sites you can't enforce it)

No, you have 50 moves after the last pawn has been moved or piece taken. Except in exceptional circumstances (i.e. King already being badly placed) it would not be possible to mate a long king in under 10 moves with 2Bs or B&N both of which are easy wins in over 10 moves.
