'>' means 'greater than'.
'<' means 'less than'.

Both symbols are sometimes used on this site to indicate a range of player ratings that the poster is seeking a game against. So if I want to play somebody rated between 1500 and 1800, I would seek a game against an opponent >1500 and <1800
