Seems like they got a pretty raw deal.

The men would have staged a walk out the moment they heard
their expenses were not being met.

"After qualifying for this prestigious event, we have to pay our own expenses
to come and play in this championship."

Good luck to them, they need to stick together on this one.

Even if you get your expenses paid, it's still aggravating to have to participate in a badly organised tournament and sleep next to a highway.

FIDE should at least pay all their expenses NOW.
Otherwise, better let Karpov to try to do this job.
