I just got back from a session with Playchess.com. In the first game my opponent led with 1. e4 so I play d5 as is my custom. I'm a center-counter, Scandinavian player. I even play it on RHP, hoping I'll learn something. Anyway, the guy on the other end requests an abort. I figure maybe he has to go to dinner or his house is on fire or something. So I agree. Then I notice at the bottom of the screen in the chat box: "I don't play crappy openings." What can you say about people like that? I guess he wasn't Scandinavian. A year ago on Playchess.com I played the Cochrane gambit against the Petrov (I think that's what they call the variation--you know, when you sac the knight on f7). So I beat the pants off the guy, then he writes a comment at the bottom of the screen. He's used to playing "proper" openings, not "junk." On Playchess, you get the snide, sarcastic remarks. On ICC you get driveling maniacs who bang nonsense into their keyboard. It just never stops, does it?

I've only ever had one problem with an opponent on Playchess, but it took the cake for sheer rude and vulgar behavior. It beat anything I'd ever seen; even on Yahoo! Of course if I'm as stupid as the guy said, what does that say about him that I beat him? You just have to accept that there are idiots out there.
Originally posted by AThousandYoungHey, I was that whiner! In all seriousness, I'm sorry if the Sicilian post came across in the wrong way. I just found it shocking that I could play 400 games and not get one open Sicilian. I enjoy this forum and wouldn't want to get a poor reputation here.

And please don't lump me in with someone who would call an opponent's opening 'crap' and cancel the game.
Thanks,
Scott

In chess they do not advise studying openings "early in your chess career" but please! you need to know the first few moves of a defense to e4 and d4. I even see high rated players make the following moves as black 1. d4 d5 2. c4 Nf6?? absolute crap...
They make up for it with tactics. In real tournament chess (live), you will not see that much...not that I enjoy that type of chess.
I broke the rule or advice and I studied openings from the begining (with Seirawan's very accessible book) and I think it actually helped me out.
Send one my way and I'll give you an open sicilian, though I'm not great with it.
