From where do you take opening moves if you use opening database? At the moment I am playing sicilian, kan variation in one of my games, and every online database, from shredder to chess openings explorer contradices a lot. I am confused, I am on trip so I do not have my cmx 10 and my fritz 10 opening databases...

What is your best choice?

www.chessgames.com
www.chessbase.com
www.redhotpawn.com/gamesexplorer

Those are your best bets if you're looking for something online, in my opinion.

Wow, after a year on this site, I did not know about this option. I am very surprised!

Thanks, Chesswick 🙂

I used www.chessgames.com for quite awhile, and then RahimK introduced me to Shredder's opening db. I find it far superior.

BTW, how do you get to the gamesexplorer here at RHP from within the site? Thanks.

There isn't a link on the site yet. I think because it is still at the experimental stage (although it seems to work perfectly well apart from not having the complete set of games on it). You can access it by typing www.redhotpawn.com/gamesexplorer (replace redhotpawn with redhotchess, chessatwork, timeforchess, or playtheimmortalgame if you use one of the aliases).

I make my own databases using peculiar selection criteria as to when the game was played and the strength of the players. I supplement this core openings database with several others, including NIC online and ChessBase online, but more important are the dozens of databases on particular openings and three feet of old style books (paper, ink, and glue), including ECO and dozens of monographs. I rely extensively on annotated games.

For all this, I use these resources in 20-40% of my games.
