Hey dudes 🙂
Anyone have an idea as to the general difference in ratings between OTB and correspondance?
I'd be interested as to where I would sit ratings wise if I joined a club?
NOTE: I've just started paying Blitz and Bullet Chess on-line at Chessbase, and I my rating after a couple of weeks is still only 1200 and approx 1280 respectively!
It depends on the website where you play and more importantly how many players there are on the site.
Here at RHP, there are quite a lot of users so the ratings would probably be reasonably accurate. The only thing to consider is that when you play online you play a LOT more games than you will ever play OTB.
I've been playing club chess for 6 months or so and i've only played 6 games! This is because i don't have a rating and the teams are picked by rating. The consequence is that i need to, if possible, win all my games in order to get as good a rating as i can in the shortest possible time (cos i'd like to be playing regularly before im 50). I've done ok so far but the games i play in are games that players want to miss (against better teams that have better players) so im averaging just over 50% which isn't good enouph. In order to have a rating comarable to my RHP rating i need to win about 70-80%(ish), depending on the strength (rating) of the people i play.
So, in answer to your question, you have less oportunity to increase your rating in OTB chess as there are less games. This means you have to be more consistent than you do here. If you always play higher rated players on this site and manage to keep a consistent rating while doing that, i'd say your rating was pretty accurate.
