Hi,
Can you please read this:
http://www.fide.com/official/handbook.asp?level=c05
and let me know what you understand ? Can you play for another country in chess olympiad without having that country citizenship/passport? I really need to this as I have qualified for the country where I am resident but I am told by the federation(local federation, not FIDE) that I can not go. Should I try to make an appeal ?
I appreciate your replies.
P.S. I am currently registered for the resident country federation
Originally posted by Redmikea bit debatable...as long as they have a tournament and the top 4 are supposed to qualify, and you are eligible to participate...I think you might appeal directly to FIDE...
I'd imagine that, if your local federation don't select you (for whatever reason) to be in their olympiad team, then you cannot go.
Your eligible to be selected, no more.
Originally posted by Fat LadyI am wandering if FIDE has right to decide over the specific country federation or this in that country federation hands..
Lots of non-Welsh players have represented Wales in the Olympiads. I think it's a pity that a country's chess federation would rather select a strong Englishman whose great grandmother once took a day trip to Cardiff over a weaker born and bred Welshman.

On the other hand, if they says "Yes" and FIDE says "No", then it's time to study the rules. Until then it's only a hypothetical question, as I see it.

I am not sure the local federation can exclude you based on some internal extra rules that do not match Fide rules...
if they are affiliated to FIDE they must respect FIDE rules..this is my opinion...(of course, subjective opinion as I am personally involved)
Originally posted by vipiuI think you're missing the point. The Olympiad team is chosen by the local federation. They can send who they want as long as they are not ineligible. Even if you are eligible, they don't have to send you. There is no FIDE rule that the local federation has to send the 4 highest rated eligible people, for example.
it is debatable...if FIDE says yes, you are eligible...

Originally posted by vipiuWell, I would like to play the Olympic Team of Russia, that would be something. 😵 If, according to the FIDE rules, that it's okay, then Russias local chess federation has nothing to say about it. So sweet! 🙄

I say that that's it is more of it than the FIDE rules here...
If the local federation says no, then it is no, therefore this is just a hypothetical debate.
Originally posted by vipiuWhat do you want from us, more than you can get from your local federation? If we say, "Yes, go for it!", does this get you into any better situation than you have now?
don't exagerate it, they made a tournament, they said top4 will qualify for the Olympiad team, I finished in top 4, etcetera...
Do an appeal, and let it stay with that. If they still say no, what can you do more? Push your way into the team?
Why don't you play for your proper country, by the way?
